Raleigh Neighborhood Spotlight - Historic Boylan Heights
One of the best parts of living in Raleigh is the bevy of gorgeous, historic neighborhoods. While there is a lot to love about new developments, you can’t beat the allure of a gorgeous oak tree offering shade on a hot North Carolina day. Boylan Heights, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, is a crowd favorite, and it’s easy to see why.
Original homes were built with Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow styles of architecture. Although many have been updated, you will still see the charm everywhere you look. One of the neighborhood’s historic homes Montfort Hall, now known as Heights House, was recently renovated into a nine room boutique hotel that can be also be used as event space. The historic home sits on the highest point in Boylan Heights and is one of the few remaining pre-civil war houses in the area. If you’re in need of a “staycation” Heights House Hotel is the perfect place to escape.
A spring walk will reveal gorgeous azaleas, dogwoods, and redbuds. In fall you can spot elaborate jack-o-lanterns, and at Christmas expect classical lights and porches adorned with garland. It is obvious that those who call Boylan Heights home take great pride in their neighborhood. They even host an annual art walk, which is popular throughout the Triangle area.
The Boylan Heights ArtWalk is a happening not to be missed. Although it had to go virtual in 2020, the community event will be back in December 2021, showcasing the work of nearly 100 local artists and creatives. Art lovers come to admire work on porches and in homes. It is just one of the many inimitable offerings in the neighborhood.
