The Umstead Staycation
As summer comes to an end and I reflect back on what might be the strangest summer (and year) I realize that you don’t always have to travel long distances to get away - that’s why the #staycation can be the best escape of all. Last year we decided that we were going to avoid the traffic and drive a few exits west to our favorite Labor Day Weekend retreat, The Umstead Hotel & Spa.
The hotel sits on 12 acres of landscaped grounds and is just a half mile from highway 40. While you may not be spending your days on sandy beaches - you are surrounded by nature while relaxing by the pool, under a cabana, with a good book and delicious cocktail in hand (I highly recommend the strawberry spritz). You may also choose to get pampered at the luxe spa that offers everything from mani/pedis, facials, massage, steam room, etc. We opted to not use the spa this year but we did get facials & massages last year and on a scale from 1- 10, I give both services a 12! We did enjoy a nice stroll around the lake at sunset and for a second forgot that we were only a few miles from home.
Our Lakeview Suite offered everything we could possibly need and more - two flatscreen TVs, a bar area, half bath, living room, bedroom, large bathroom with walk-in shower, soaking tub, double vanity, and a balcony the overlooks the lake and pool. What more could you want?
If you are foodie, then you will love the fine dining experience at Herons - the sommelier will recommend the perfect wine to pair with your meal while you just set back and enjoy. The rest of our staycay we opted for in room dining and it was just as delicious - everything from the American breakfast to the late night milk and chocolate chip cookies.
Getting away isn’t as easy as it used to be. So if you’re in need of a tranquil escape from reality, I highly recommend visiting The Umstead, you won’t be disappointed. I’d love to know your favorite staycation places or things to do - leave me your recommendations in the comments below!
